oh dear... geico. 15 minutes could save you 15% or more on car insurance. belcher. i'm tamron hall. we're following developing news right now. president obama is taking to twitter right now, part of the intensifying push by the white house to get public opinion on their side over negotiations against house republicans on the so-called fiscal cliff. the president himself tweeted out plans for the q and a a short time ago saying he'll answer questions about the cliff, his proposal and pending tax hikes on the official white house twitter feed. press secretary jay carney insisted the white house is still optimistic it can reach a deal with congressional republicans. >> there has been progress, and we can achieve a bipartisan agreement. the obstacle remains at this point the refusal to acknowledge by republican leaders that there is no deal that achieves the kind of balance that is necessary without raising rates on the top 2%. >> and there are just 29 days to go for the two parties to find some sort of middle ground, and joining me now from the white house nbc news correspondent krist

♪ ♪ i want candy ♪ ♪ i want candy >>> hi, everyone. i'm tamron hall. the news nation is following developing news. president obama on the ground in michigan right now starting the week right where he left off last week. using the public to pressure republicans in to extending tax cuts for the middle class to avert the fiscal cliff. these are some live pictures of a diamler plant outside of detroit where the president will be speaking in a couple of minutes. the president greeted by the state's republican governor about an hour ago. one day before a controversial right to work bill the white house is opposed to is signed in to law. we'll have more on that later in the show but as far as the fiscal cliff, our first read team says we are already at the end game if the goal is to get a deal passed by december 21st. now that means the president and house speaker boehner have five days max to reach an agreement. that takes us to the 15th. then the legislation has to be written by the 18th. the president is now working two strategies to get a deal done. he met with speaker boehner yester

to get a check of the morning's other top stories. we've got tamron at the news desk. >> good morning, everyone. with less than two weeks to go until the fiscal cliff deadline, new signs of progress in our nation's capital. chuck todd has the latest. chuck, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, tamron. they're very close. 24 hours after speaker boehner delivered a counteroffer to the president that talked about raising rates on people that made a million dollars or more, the white house came up with their own counteroffer. they would like to raise tax rates on those that make $400,000 or more, which sup from the original demands of $250,000. overall, the president is looking for $1.2 trillion in tax cuts. he believes they proposed $1.2 trillion in spending cuts, if you will, a total package of $2.4 trillion when it comes to deficit reduction. boehner's folks over there, the republican speaker, they questioned some of the math that the white house came up with, particularly on the spending cuts side. tamron, today is going to be a big day because the rank and file of both the democr

coverage from new york. craig? >> thank you so much. i'm in for tamron hall today. following the breaking news. a massacre at an elementary school in newtown. nbc has confirmed at this point that 26 have been killed. including 18 children. and eight adults. also confirmed among the dead, the 20-year-old shooter who we're told is from connecticut. law enforcement officials telling us that he wore all black. he carried two guns. the weapons have been recovered. we heard just a few moments ago from lieutenant paul vance with state police there. telling officials there, telling the reporters who gathered that the scene is secure. that the public is safe at this point. he also indicated that they were -- they were serving search warrants, search warrants according to state police have been issued in and out of the state of connecticut. newtown for folk who is are not familiar with the area, about an hour and a half outside new york city. this is -- this is about an hour and a half outside new york city. northern fairfield county. small town. some 27,000, 28,000 people in newtown, connecticut.
